BECOMING A LEADER
Why become a
Leader?
The benefits
of becoming a volunteer Leader are limitless.
Scouting
is dynamic and fun. As a Leader you will help to provide self
development to young people through a variety of challenging,
adventurous, achievement-oriented, teamwork and leadership-based
experiences.
Scouting
provides adults with an opportunity to lead and gain satisfaction
working with young people and other adults; to make a direct positive
impact on your local community and on the lives of young people.
Benefits of
becoming a Leader include:
- Make new friends
- Stay fit and healthy
- Gain self confidence
- Travel nationally and
internationally
- Learn new skills such as
abseiling, canoeing, flying and gliding
- Earn proficiency badges
- Undertake leadership and
development training
- Attend statewide training
workshops such as the Konara, Seeonie and Mindari
- Perform in a Gang Show
- Join a formal peer network such
as Scout Fellowship
There
are many roles for adults in Scouts Australia. You may become a Leader
of a Joey Mob, Cub Scout Pack, Scout Troop or Venturer Scout Unit,
which involves varying degrees of program planning and weekly meetings.
You may have
a certain interest in adventurous activities such as abseiling or water
activities and become an Activity Leader.
As you
progress through Scouting, you can also become involved in training and
leading adults.
Leaders
of Joey Scout Mobs, Cub Scout Packs, Scout Troops and Venturer Scout
Units need to allocate one night a week for the group meeting during
school term time. You will also need to attend group activities (e.g.
hikes or camping trips) on a few weekends a year. Also attendance at a
monthly meeting of Leaders is required.
Leaders
are given training and support by other Leaders from Scouts Australia,
and are given resources of program ideas. There is training in all
aspects of youth leadership, program planning, safety and other
requirements.
Before you
are permitted to work with young people you will have to undergo
interviews, and reference and police checks.
What
Training Do I Have to Do?
As
a Leader, you must undertake Basic and Advanced training in working
with young people, including learning the basics of Scouting,
leadership, safety and program planning. You are also required to make
a commitment to the completion of Advanced Training within a three-year
period. This training is a Scouting standard all over the world, and is
known as the Wood Badge.
Scouts
Australia is a registered training organisation. Depending on what
Leadership training you do with us, you could be awarded a nationally
recognised Certificate III, IV or Diploma in Leadership. This can give
you some advance standing in certain further education courses and
employment opportunities Australia-wide.
Training
generally takes place on weekends.
What
is the Cost?
There
is no cost involved for volunteer leaders in meeting their weekly
Scouting commitment. Your Group covers training expenses. However, for
major events such as Jamborees you may be asked to contribute in whole
or in part to these costs.
You
will have to purchase your own uniform, and depending on the activities
of your Group, you may need to purchase (or borrow) some of your own
equipment from time to time.
I
don't have time to be a leader full-time. What else can I do?
If
you can't spare the time to lead a Group regularly, there are still
opportunities to help Scouts. Scouts Australia has numerous activity
centres and need people to help when they can. For example, if you are
interested in abseiling, you can volunteer to help out when Groups go
abseiling.
Alternatively,
contact your local group, who are always happy for people to help when
they can. You could also join your local Group's Committee to help with
the running and fundraising for the Group.
However,
whenever you are involved in the position of working with young people
you will be required to undergo a Police check.

Supporting
our exciting youth development programs is an adult training and
development program known internationally as the Wood Badge Training
